My Significant Writing Project is the second paper we wrote this semester. My paper is called, “The Role of IMRAD in Science” and focuses on how one can use the IMRAD format for writing research papers to properly fit in the science Discourse. We used numerous works from different authors such as Christina Haas, P.K.R. Nair and V.D. Nair, and James Gee. The thesis of my paper I try to convey to the reader is by using the IMRAD format, writers are equipped with the ability to successfully portray their information from research or experiments in the most fluent way possible and spread their knowledge to the public. IMRAD is an acronym that stands for: introduction, materials and methods, results, and, discussion. James Gee talks about seven building tasks of language, that can all be connected to various aspects of IMRAD, as explained in my project. Also, Christina Haas’ journal records her observational study of a college student named Eliza and her understanding of literature throughout her four years in college. By observing Eliza’s progress as a college level reader, we learn that through perseverance and time, one has the ability to conform to a Discourse of their choosing. Though I considered this project to be the most difficult of the semester, it was also the best grade I received out of my three projects. My high grade on a difficult project raised my confidence in my academic writing ability and is the reason for choosing this paper as my significant writing project.
