Global Studies is mainly a discussion based course, with the homework being we email our professor a discussion question the night before every class. Throughout the semester, we read numerous books, one of these being “This Changes Everything” written by Naomi Klein. The book tackles the idea of climate change and its affects on government politics around the world. Myself along with one of my peers were required to make a 20 minute presentation plus lead a class discussion based on a reading assignment from the novel. I learned lots of new information through this project. My chapter focused on the conflict between indigenous people and energy companies trying to build pipelines that would affect their land. This was a topic I was not initially informed of before starting my project, and the information I learned was outstanding and changed my perception of pipelines. Although building these pipelines may be beneficial for these fossil fuel and energy companies and the energy industry, they are terrible for the environment and effectively ruin the water supply for indigenous communities. The struggle between both parties will continue for years to come, and plays a large role in the preservation of our environment.
I believe this sample shows something meaningful for this course because of how it relates to the course as a whole. In a discussion based course, it is only fitting that our presentation have us lead a class discussion at the end that involves many different informed opinions from both our peers and our professor. After my presentation, I heard many different viewpoints on my topic that effectively influenced my thoughts on the subject. This speaks to the course as a whole and the intent my professor has in these discussions. Discussions are meant for everyone to have their viewpoints told, and allows a person to absorb all of his or her peers’ opinions and compare them with your own. Being a discussion based course, it was only fitting that our final presentation end with a long discussion. Attached below is a link to the presentation for my Global Studies course.
