Peer Review

The piece of work I chose to examine was Kiara’s rough draft from our first paper on the subject of Discourses.  After examining the numerous comments I made on Kiara’s paper, I noticed that the style in which I peer review has remained constant throughout the course of this semester.  In the introduction paragraph, I give feedback on the quality of the “hook” of the paper and also on how my peer introduces his or her sources.  I then give my opinion on their thesis, whether it is clear and concise, and offer any advice I can think of.  In the body paragraphs, I focus on the “I Say” that the reader portrays, and whether I think they should add more explanation and context to the quote of their choice, or whether I think they did a fine enough job.  I also give constant feedback on quote integration as noted on page two of Kiara’s paper.  I give a comment stating, “Try and introduce the quotation a little more before using it.  Give the reader a little background as to where it is coming from.  Good quote choice though” (2).  As noted in my comment, I always try to add a positive remark at the end of my comments.

Through peer revision, I also use a method taught to me by an old high school teacher.  I read the paper out loud to myself to test the overall flow of the writing and see whether sentences are able to build off each other and be easy for the reader to understand.  After looking over the comments I made months after this paper, I notice that I have a good variety in the comments I make.  I don’t focus solely on “idea” or “evidence” comments, but instead, I attempt to make my comments rounded in order to maximize their value to my peer.  After revisitation, I believe that I should continue how I am currently conducting my peer reviews.    Although there is always room for growth, I believe if I continue to build on the concepts I already have been focusing on, I can effectively maximize the potential I have that comes with peer reviews, and assist my peers in writing the best paper they are capable of.
